UA local 184 Training Center will be hosting an International Training Fund Regional Training Class for the new TIP TIG welding process on September 27th, 28th, and 29th of 2016 at the Local Union 184 Training Center. The class is a 20 hour train the trainer class for current UA welding instructors.

The TIP TIG manual process offers numerous weld benefits and is far superior to the manual Tig process. The TIP TIG process lowers weld sensitivity and can provide superior weld quality and higher wire feed rates than many automated hot wire Tig welds. The process has been proven on all schedules of carbon and stainless steel and tested on inconel 625 and other alloys with great success. This process is helping the UA weld at a very high speed and the highest quality possible manually.

As a part of this class the Training Center would like to invite interested signatory contractors and customers to a demonstration on September 29th from 1:00 to 3:00 p. m. A lunch meet and greet will be hosted from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. The demonstrations will be given by the UA instructors and the newly trained students. Please come out and look at this new exciting technology.

presentation at the 2016 Stainless Steel World Americas Conference to be held in Houston, Texas at the George R. Brown Convention Center from November 9th to 10th, 2016.

ABSTRACT

Welding of Grade 91 (9Cr-1Mo-V) chromium-molybdenum steel has presented numerous challenges since its introduction in the 1980s. One of the principal challenges has been the selection of the optimal welding process. For single-sided-groove welds, the root bead and hot pass(es), are deposited using manual Gas Tungsten-Arc Welding (GTAW) process with an inert gas purge (most commonly argon), followed by another welding process(es) for completion of weld. It goes without saying, that the GTAW process can produce welds of high quality; however, manual welding it is extremely expensive and labor intensive, requiring skilled welders with extreme hand eye coordination and dexterity. Tip Tig has forever change how P91 will be welded for either shop or field fabrication by introducing a semiautomatic GTAW hot wire welding system. Tip Tig’s system is cost effective and can be used for the entire weld from root to cap while producing the high quality weld that the industry expects from the GTAW process.

On behalf of the Stainless Steel World Americas Chairman (Mr. Fred Schweighardt) and the Steering Committee, I am pleased to confirm that your abstract P91 Welds from Root to Cap with TIP TIG was accepted for presentation at the 2016 Stainless Steel World Americas Conference to be held in Houston, Texas at the George R. Brown Convention Center from November 9th to 10th, 2016.

Charles W. “Pat” Patrick is a Director of Technical Services, Maverick Testing Laboratories, Inc. (an ALS company). His technical expertise spans over 53 years of welding engineering and consulting on major projects both domestically and internationally. His technical expertise areas include pressure vessels, piping and structural welding as applicable to construction of petrochemical, chemical, oil and gas, facilities and offshore platforms, welded fabrication for nuclear (PWR & BWR), fossil (coal & natural gas), waste-to-energy and co-generation, brewery, pulp & paper, pipeline, chemical processing plants, pharmaceutical, equipment manufacturing, shipbuilding (nuclear submarines) and aerospace. Pat has authored or co-authored several technical articles, white papers, book chapters and presented numerous technical presentations. He graduated from Liberty University with a B.S. He holds an International Patent for “Improved Welding Process”. Pat is a member of the American Welding Society (AWS), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE). He is also very active in various Code committees and task groups.

What is TIP TIG…?

The TIP TIG process is a semi automatic wire feed technology which creates a vibratory effect on the wire in addition to combining Hotwire current to the filler metal prior to entering the weld puddle.

The vibratory effect is created by a linear forward & backward mechanical motion created by the custom wire feeder system

The Hotwire current is created by a secondary power source within the TIP TIG unit.

  • The Tip-Tig manual process offers numerous weld benefits and is far superior to the manual Tig process.
  • The Tip-Tig process lowers weld sensitivity and can provide superior weld quality and much higher wire feed rates compared to manual TIG.

The process has been proven on all schedules of carbon and stainless steel and tested on Inconel 625, Duplex, Super Duplex, Titanium, Nickel and Copper Alloys with great success.
This process is helping companies weld at a very high speed and with the highest quality possible manually.

The afternoon will be a pipe demonstration on a 6″ sch 80 CS pipe to show the process from root to cap in position as well as stainless fillet welds on T Joints.

Open root welding of austenitic and duplex stainless steel with gas tungsten-arc welding (GTAW) is typically performed using an inert backing gas for purging, such as argon, to protect the root pass from atmospheric contamination and oxidation. In many cases, using a backing gas for purging is impractical due to system design, access limitations, personnel safety, schedule and various economic factors. Until recently the only options available for open root welding of austenitic and duplex stainless steel that eliminated the need for backing gas were: flux agents, flux coated/flux cored rods and gas metal-arc welding using the short-circuiting transfer (GMAW-S). Each of these options have been used successfully, to some degree, in diverse service environments.

Now after extensive application research, development and testing the need for backing gas has been eliminated for open root welding of austenitic and duplex stainless steel using a semiautomatic GTAW hot wire welding system technically known as High Deposition Metal Transfer Gas Tungsten-Arc Welding (HDMTGTAW), combined with stainless steel or duplex flux cored wires (AWS/ASME A/SFA-5.22 and A/SFA-5.22M) and argon shielding.
